Blesma 100 Easingwold Cycle Sportive

May 2018 sees the charity BLESMA headlining the Easingwold Cycle Sportive.

The Event will take place on Saturday 26th May 2018 and will see riders from all abilities tackle the 100 mile (approx) route through the picturesque Vale of York.

The route is an undulating route with no serious climbs therefore suitable for Handbikes, Recumbants and standard Road Bikes.  There is also the addition of a 50 ish mile route that can be entered.

Who are Blesma and Why Easingwold?

Since 1932, BLESMA have been the only national Armed Forces Charity that supports limbless veterans for the duration of their lives.

Blesma, The Limbless Veterans helps all serving and ex-Service men and women who have lost limbs, or lost the use of limbs or eyes, to rebuild their lives by providing rehabilitation activities and welfare support.

Jonathan Bell is the Association’s most recent ambassador. Jonathan has been a Member since 2006, before which he served in the 1st Battalion, The Green Howards, completing several tours of Northern Ireland. In his spare time, Jonathan is a keen hand-cyclist and has played a pivotal role in a number of Blesma’s cycling activities including Soldier Ride UK, the Battlefield Bike Ride, and the Blesma 100.

“I feel really honoured to have been asked to become an ambassador,” said Jonathan, 52, from Surrey. “My role will involve encouraging more people to get involved in more events, and to raise a greater awareness for the charity – in particular the Blesma 100.”

Paul "Smudge" Smith who is this years organiser knows Jonathan from School days in Surrey and from also serving with 1st Battalion The Green Howards.

"When I received a call from "Dinger" asking if I would be interested in helping launch this ride for BLESMA I couldnt say no.  The ties between being an Old Gordonian and Green Howard are still as strong as ever and I am priveledged to have served with such a great Regiment and now provide a service for all those who left something behind in one way or another"

The Ride

The route is approximately 165km or 100miles and is a circular route starting and finishing in the popular Market Town of Easingwold.

It is an anti clockwise route that meanders on flat almost traffic free roads up to Thirsk and then begins to head south to Topcliffe and Boroughbridge.  It criss crosses the River Swale on numerous occaisions but most prominantly is crosses the 18th century bridge at Aldwark (toll free for cyclists).  The route takes in the picturesque Beningbrough Hall before (for some old Kings Div recruits) the running loops of Haxby, Strensall, Strensall Common and Flaxton.

It then turns back towards Easingwold and finishes with a dash up Long Street and a finish back at the Galtres Centre.

The route will have three stops which will have water, fruit and other products to help fuel your ride.  These will be confirmed prior to the event.

All other information will be communicated via email and social media on the Easingwold Cycle Sportive FB page.

The 50 mile route follows the majority of the above and will have one stop.
