This is our seventh Grindleford Goat, a four-ride Sportive which started in 2013 as a fundraiser for our then very new community shop (make sure you visit this quirky shop while you are in Grindleford!). In 2019, thanks to your support, the shop, and the Goat, are both thriving.

To celebrate our seventh this year we are putting on a Day Festival of Cycling here in the heart of the glorious Peak District countryside. Our Facebook page has regular updates and local cycling events.

The Goat rides

The event is very popular; the Billy, Nanny and Kid rides attract over 400 riders each year.

There are opportunities for all abilities and ages. The two big rides are fully supported road routes, and the challenging family MTB ride goes through local private farmland kindly opened just for this event. This year there is an exciting new Gruff Gravel route for knobbly aficionados who like being off-road and finding their own way round. All the events start and finish in Grindleford.

The most challenging is the 108km Billy, featuring some of the most demanding climbs and exciting descents in the Peak District. The mid route, the Nanny, will be a tour of 56km suitable for reasonably fit adults and will take in some of our most stunning scenery and natural beauty. The third, the Kid, will be a family route of about 15.2 km that will take place on quiet roads and rough tracks including a beautiful 2km section on private tracks linking Mag Clough and Bank Top farms. Last, but definitely not least, the Gruff Gravel ride, making its first appearance this year, will extend your knowledge of green lanes and quarry tracks and take you down drove roads you never knew existed. Progress can be as quick (or slow) as you like. If you are Goat enough, you can sign up for one of the main rides AND the Sir William Hill Climb (see the separate listing) for half price.

Food

The Goat is called the Goat because the riders climb steep hills and eat a lot! All the routes will incorporate opportunities for refreshments and other interesting diversions. We will provide a feed station on the two longer rides and some encouragement along the way for the Kid.

The rolling start will be preceded by

  • quality espresso coffee
  • local, dry-cured bacon on ciabatta rolls or brie and mushrooms on Derbyshire oatcakes (you can pre-order these when you register for the ride).

Then

  • quality home-made cakes will be available at the Monyash feed station on the two main routes (extra Mam Nick snack stop with hot drinks on the Billy)
  • an optional pasta meal will be available at the finish. This is bookable in advance online.
  • Tea, coffee and cakes will be available through the day.

We hope you will stay for the whole day and settle in for a post-ride beer at the Sir William pub. Then you can wander glass in hand over the road to see the Sir William Hill Climb.

THANK YOU FOR ALL YOUR SUPPORT FOR OUR VILLAGE!
