Surrey Cycle RacingLeague
The Surrey CycleRacing League is the UKs largest and most successful road racing league. The Surrey League, as it is more commonlyknown, provided racing for over 1300 riders during its extensive 2011 programmeof events for all abilities and ages.
After a cycleracing career that saw him as National Amateur Champion in 1962, NationalProfessional Champion in 1964 and spending four years racing as a professionalin Belgium, Keith Butler started the Surrey League in 1983 after promoting hisfirst road race the previous year.
In 1983 the SurreyLeague had only 16 affiliated clubs and promoted 28 races. In 2011 the Surrey League had 66 affiliatedclubs and promoted over 100 days of racing. Events are held most weekends between the months of February and Novemberand on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday evening during the summer months.
The Surrey Leaguepromotes races for all abilities and ages. During the summer months the Surrey League runs events every Mondayevening at Angmering Raceway for all Youth riders, every Tuesday evening at Goodwoodfor senior riders and every Friday evening for 4th category ridersat Dunsfold Park, in traffic free environments. These events are ideal for those new to racing. Although the Surrey League is aimed more atthe grass route level, it does promote many events for Elite riders includingone of the longest stage races in the UK, the Revolutions 5 Day.
As well aspromoting road races the Surrey League also takes teams of riders to manyevents at home and abroad. The SurreyLeague can be seen regularly competing in Ireland at the Tour of the North, theTour of Munster and the Ras. The SurreyLeague also enters a team of women in the National Womens Team Series whichhas rounds all over the UK including a round in Ireland.
